3 Fun Focus Dog Training Games

Did you know you can teach your pup to look at you (by default) for direction by playing fun focus dog training games? Before we dive in, let’s first explore the two types of ‘focus’ you can teach your dog.

There are two types of ‘focus’ you can teach your pup:

1. Put it on verbal cue (say their name/or ‘look at me’ to get them to focus on you)
2. Default attention behavior (teach them to randomly check in during distracting situations)

Here are three fun (and easy) games that can help you teach default attention behavior. To learn more, check out the video below or keep reading!

All you’ll need is a clicker, high-value treats, and your dog or puppy (ideally, on a leash so they don’t wander off)!

Game One — Reward for looking

This game is excellent for teaching your dog default focus behaviors.

1. Drop a treat by your feet in front of their paws.
2. Don’t say ANYTHING…just wait it out…
3. The moment your dog looks at you, mark the behavior (clicker/verbal marker) and drop another treat
4. Repeat the process 5-10 times, or until your dog gets the hang of it.

Game Two — Learning to Come Back

This game is perfect for teaching your dog to disengage and check in with you on walks when there can be really good smells. It also is great for practicing recall!

1. Toss a treat 2–3 feet away
2. Wait for your dog to come back to you (try not to say anything, but after 10-15 seconds if they are still not returning, you can make a kissy noise, or whistle sound to get their attention)
3. If they don’t come back after 10-15 seconds, try game one until the default attention is stronger

Game Three — Engage/Disengage

For this one you will need a small distraction — either a toy/play barking sounds on YouTube. This is the perfect game for dogs who really struggle with distractions on walks.

1. Make/play a noise that won’t scare them, but doesn’t get them too excited (away from you)
2. Wait for them to look back at you
3. Mark and reward them for looking back to you
